LEADERSHIP OR DEALERSHIP?

In every segment of the society we find ourselves, we are either leaders or are led by someone or a group of people.

Today, we will be focusing on the aspect of leading others. To start with, what do we think should be our motive for aspiring to lead others? Is it to show the led the right way to go about their duties and manage their collective resources well or to neglect true leadership and milk them dry?

In our larger society, we have Presidents, Governors, Senators, Representatives, Chairmen etc. also, in our own small tertiary environment; we have Student Union Leaders, College and Departmental Presidents. In our schools, it’s fast becoming a norm to aspire to become a President or any other official just for the sake of siphoning the dues contributed by members of their association. This is definitely the influence of our political system on us the leaders of tomorrow.

Many student leaders today, make deals instead of leading. They try as much as possible to corruptly enrich themselves while in office to the detriment of the led. They rule without thinking of executing projects that should have served as legacies after leaving office.

In my opinion, in as much being influenced by our corrupt politicians, I feel it is as a result of the deadened conscience they possess. This is because if they follow the pricking of their conscience, they would lead with a difference.

We can turn things around and be true leaders instead of dealers in other people’s resources by putting all proceeds in our care to honest and just use.

Student leaders should prepare budgets which will include viable projects which have direct bearing on the lives of the members of their associations. We should also remember that carrying tarnished images will automatically disqualify us from future appointments because those who know our past will witch-hunt us.

Lastly, do not forget that, “God’s kobo is better than Satan’s Naira”. Please provide honest leadership and not dishonest leadership.
